Caesar Becomes Popular
When Caesar returned to Rome he campaigned for a post in the Roman and was successful. His first wife had died, so once more Caesar decided to have a politically useful marriage although that marriage did not last long when Caesar divorced his wife on suspicion of adultery. For the next few years Caesar continued to buy popularity with the wealthy and the people of Rome. He eventually achieved the position of aedile which he took advantage of. Caesar bought favor in many ways including bribes, gladiator contests, public shows, banquets, and games. Caesar also acted so he would be able to renovate public buildings to impress many of the common people of Rome. Many of the senators noticed Caesar and disliked how he was bribing his way around to become more popular. Also, Caesar had less and less time to pay people that he owed money to. But Caesar continued to bribe people and eventually found himself in the Chief Priest (pontifex maximus) position. Being chief priest gave Caesar a lot of power and it also gave him a good appearence that people would be hard pressed to criticize.
